# Apple iOS and macOS: crafted file can crash an app via out-of-bounds read

An out-of-bounds read in Apple's operating systems lets a maliciously crafted file cause an app to terminate unexpectedly. The sources describe a crash, not code execution or data theft.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the device OS version in Settings > General > About (or `sw_vers -productVersion` on macOS) against the fixed versions listed in the fix field.

## Fix

- Update iOS and iPadOS to `26.7.2` or `27.2`.
- Update macOS Tahoe to `26.7.2`, macOS Sequoia to `15.8.2`, or macOS Golden Gate to `27.2`.
- Update tvOS, visionOS and watchOS to `27.2`.

## Timeline

## From the sources

An out-of-bounds read was addressed with improved bounds checking. This issue is fixed in iOS 26.7.2 and iPadOS 26.7.2, iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2, macOS Golden Gate 27.2, macOS Sequoia 15.8.2, macOS Tahoe 26.7.2, tvOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2. Processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to unexpected app termination.
