# Apple iOS and macOS: out-of-bounds read lets a USB device crash or read kernel memory

An out-of-bounds read in Apple's operating systems can be triggered by a malicious USB device, causing the system to terminate unexpectedly. The same flaw can let the device read kernel memory.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed version under Settings > General > About (iOS/iPadOS) or Apple menu > About This Mac (macOS)
- Compare against the fixed versions: `iOS 26.7.2`, `iPadOS 26.7.2`, `iOS 27.2`, `iPadOS 27.2`, `macOS Tahoe 26.7.2`, `macOS Sequoia 15.8.2`, `macOS Golden Gate 27.2`

## Fix

- Update iOS and iPadOS to `26.7.2` or `27.2`
- Update macOS Tahoe to `26.7.2`, macOS Sequoia to `15.8.2`, or macOS Golden Gate to `27.2`

## Timeline

## From the sources

An out-of-bounds read was addressed with improved bounds checking. This issue is fixed in iOS 26.7.2 and iPadOS 26.7.2, iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2, macOS Golden Gate 27.2, macOS Sequoia 15.8.2, macOS Tahoe 26.7.2. A malicious USB device may be able to cause unexpected system termination or read kernel memory.
