# rdesktop: malicious RDP server crashes client via bitmap cache read

rdesktop through 1.9.0 has a heap out-of-bounds read in process_bmpcache2() in orders.c. A malicious RDP server can send crafted revision-2 bitmap cache orders that make the client memcpy() past its receive buffer, crashing it.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `rdesktop -version` or check the installed package version against `1.9.0`
- unknown

## Fix

- Upgrade rdesktop past `1.9.0` once a fixed release is available; unknown whether a patched version exists
- Until then, only connect to RDP servers you trust

## Timeline

## From the sources

rdesktop through 1.9.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in process_bmpcache2() in orders.c that allows malicious RDP servers to crash clients via crafted revision-2 bitmap cache orders. Attackers can send an uncompressed order with large width/height or an underflowing mode nibble and short payload, causing memcpy() reads past the receive buffer and denial of service.
