# Ghostscript on RHEL 8: crafted PostScript escapes -dSAFER and runs commands

A missing fix from a rebase left privileged .forceput operations in Ghostscript's .charkeys procedure under-protected on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. A specially crafted PostScript file can bypass -dSAFER, reading files outside permitted paths or running commands as the Ghostscript process.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed package with `rpm -q ghostscript` on RHEL 8 hosts
- Confirm whether Ghostscript processes untrusted PostScript or PDF input, such as print or conversion pipelines

## Fix

- Update the `ghostscript` package on RHEL 8 to the fixed build from Red Hat's advisory for this CVE (version unknown from the sources)
- Until patched, avoid rendering untrusted PostScript files with Ghostscript

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T21:57:20+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-112177

## From the sources

A flaw was found in Ghostscript as shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. The correction for CVE-2019-14869 was omitted during the rebase from version 9.25 to 9.27, leaving privileged .forceput operations in the .charkeys procedure insufficiently protected. Processing a specially crafted PostScript file may allow an attacker to bypass -dSAFER restrictions and access files outside the permitted paths or execute commands with the permissions of the Ghostscript process.
