# MeTube: feed-metadata thumbnail fetch allows server-side request forgery

MeTube's feed-metadata thumbnail fetch code in app/ytdl.py can be made to request URLs chosen by an attacker, which is server-side request forgery. An attacker can use the server to reach internal addresses it should not reach, with difficult exploitation and a public exploit reported.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the MeTube version in use; affected releases are up to `2026.09.28`.
- Confirm whether the deployment is reachable from the internet and whether it can reach internal networks or cloud metadata endpoints.

## Fix

- Upgrade MeTube to `2026.09.29` or later (patch commit `a3896604540223ecbb8258b41b1d745d62647d16`).
- Until upgraded, restrict outbound requests from the MeTube host to internal services and metadata addresses.

## From the sources

A security vulnerability has been detected in alexta69 MeTube up to 2026.09.28. This vulnerability affects the function DownloadQueue.__write_feed_metadata_sync of the file app/ytdl.py of the component Feed-metadata Thumbnail Fetch Handler. Such manipulation leads to server-side request forgery. The attack may be launched remotely. Attacks of this nature are highly complex. It is stated that the exploitability is difficult. The exploit has been disclosed publicly and may be used. Upgrading to version 2026.09.29 is able to resolve this issue. The name of the patch is a3896604540223ecbb8258b41b1d745d62647d16. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
