# wvWare wv: crafted Word file crashes apps via heap out-of-bounds read

wvWare's wv library has a heap out-of-bounds read in wvGetSTSH when parsing Word stylesheets. A crafted .doc file with ten or fewer styles or out-of-range base indexes makes the reading application crash, as demonstrated with AbiWord.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check whether any application in your stack links the wv or wvWare library, such as AbiWord, or uses a converter built on it.
- unknown for the exact package and version names in the sources.

## Fix

- unknown: the sources do not name a fixed wv version. Check the wv project for a release newer than `1.2.9`.
- Until patched, do not open untrusted .doc files with wv-based converters.

## Timeline

## From the sources

wvWare wv through 1.2.9 contains a heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in wvGetSTSH in stylesheet.c that allows attackers to crash applications by supplying crafted Word stylesheets. Attackers can provide a .doc file with ten or fewer styles or out-of-range style base indexes to read past heap arrays, crashing applications such as AbiWord.
