# Online-Examination-System: SQL injection in exam start lets remote attackers query the database

The exam module's startExam function in exam.php does not safely handle the topicid argument, so it is injectable as SQL. A remote attacker can read or change database contents, and a public exploit exists.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Look for `Exam::startExam` in `exam.php` in the Online-Examination-System codebase and check whether `topicid` is passed into a SQL query without parameter binding.
- Confirm whether the deployed copy matches commit `e6208e630b14657999bbfe4c9912302d2a1e2449` or earlier.

## From the sources

A vulnerability was detected in itsmeravitejak Online-Examination-System up to e6208e630b14657999bbfe4c9912302d2a1e2449. This issue affects the function Exam::startExam of the file exam.php of the component Exam Module. The manipulation of the argument topicid results in sql injection. The attack can be executed remotely. The exploit is now public and may be used. This product implements a rolling release for ongoing delivery, which means version information for affected or updated releases is unavailable. The project was informed of the problem early through an issue report but has not responded yet.
