# GiveWP WordPress plugin: path traversal reads and overwrites server files

The GiveWP WordPress plugin before 4.19.0.1 does not validate a user-supplied filename before reading it from disk. A user with a high-privilege custom role can read JSON-parseable files anywhere on the server and overwrite the plugin's stored configuration.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed GiveWP version in the WordPress admin under Plugins, or with `wp plugin get give --field=version` if WP-CLI is available.
- Review which custom roles hold high privileges over GiveWP settings.

## Fix

- Update the GiveWP plugin to `4.19.0.1` or later.
- Review custom roles that can access GiveWP and remove permissions they do not need until the update is applied.

## Timeline

## From the sources

The GiveWP WordPress plugin before 4.19.0.1 does not properly validate a user-supplied filename before reading it from disk, allowing users with a high-privilege custom role to perform path traversal, disclose the contents of JSON-parseable files anywhere on the server, and overwrite the GiveWP WordPress plugin before 4.19.0.1's stored configuration.
