# FreeRDP: crafted clipboard BMP causes crash or out-of-bounds write

FreeRDP's WinPR BMP writer miscalculates buffer size for 1-bit-per-pixel images, causing an integer underflow. A malicious RDP server acting as clipboard peer can send a crafted image that crashes the client or writes out of bounds.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `xfreerdp --version` or check the installed FreeRDP package version
- Confirm whether clipboard redirection is enabled in client sessions

## Fix

- Upgrade FreeRDP to `3.32.0` or later
- Until upgraded, disable clipboard redirection in RDP sessions

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T21:57:14+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-111881

## From the sources

FreeRDP from 3.14.1 before 3.32.0 contains an integer underflow in the WinPR BMP writer, where a mismatched stride calculation passes SIZE_MAX - 3 to Stream_Zero for sub-byte images. A malicious RDP clipboard peer can return a crafted 1-bpp BMP processed by clipboard_synthesize_image_format_to_bmp for CF_DIB/CF_DIBV5, crashing the client or causing an out-of-bounds write.
