# OpenBMB StaffDeck through 0.5.6 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated…

OpenBMB StaffDeck through 0.5.6 signs session tokens with a hard-coded default app_secret. An unauthenticated attacker can forge an HMAC-SHA256 token for the seeded 'admin' user in 'tenant_demo' and gain full tenant administration, including stored model and channel credentials.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

Check whether the app_secret setting still equals the shipped default value. Confirm which StaffDeck version is deployed (0.5.6 and earlier are affected per the sources).

## Fix

Set a unique, random app_secret in place of the default, and rotate any model and channel credentials stored in the tenant. A fixed release is not named in the sources; upgrade past 0.5.6 once the vendor publishes one.

## Timeline

## From the sources

OpenBMB StaffDeck through 0.5.6 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to forge administrator session tokens using the hard-coded default app_secret. Attackers can sign an HMAC-SHA256 token for the seeded 'admin' user in 'tenant_demo' to gain full tenant administration, including stored model and channel credentials.
