# FreeRDP: crafted persistent cache file overflows heap buffer, possible code execution

FreeRDP before 3.32.0 has a heap buffer overflow in its v3 persistent cache reader. A crafted cache file with large width and height values wraps a size calculation, so fread writes past an undersized buffer and may run code.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:freerdp affected < 3.32.0 fixed 3.32.0

## How to check

- `xfreerdp /version` or `freerdp --version` to read the installed FreeRDP version
- Check whether the client reads a persistent bitmap cache file (v3 format) from the user's cache directory
- Check the installed package version in the system package manager

## Fix

- Upgrade FreeRDP to `3.32.0` or later
- Rebuild any statically linked or vendored FreeRDP copies from a fixed release

## Timeline

## From the sources

FreeRDP before 3.32.0 contains a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in persistent_cache_read_entry_v3 that allows local attackers to corrupt memory by supplying a crafted v3 persistent cache file. Attackers can set large width and height values that wrap the size calculation in persist_cache_get_data, causing fread to overflow an undersized buffer and potentially execute code.
