# FreeRDP: unbounded fragment reassembly lets clients exhaust server memory

FreeRDP's WTSProcessChannelData keeps buffering static virtual channel fragments without a cumulative limit when the final fragment flag is withheld. An authenticated client can send endless fragments and exhaust the server's memory.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:freerdp affected >= 2.0.0, < 3.32.0 fixed 3.32.0

## How to check

- Run `xfreerdp --version` or check the installed FreeRDP package version on servers that run FreeRDP-based RDP services
- Check whether the FreeRDP build in use is older than `3.32.0`

## Fix

- Upgrade FreeRDP to `3.32.0` or later
- Restrict RDP server access to trusted clients until patched

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T21:57:12+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-111377

## From the sources

FreeRDP from 2.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an unbounded reassembly vulnerability in WTSProcessChannelData that fails to enforce cumulative fragment limits. Authenticated clients can start a static virtual channel message, withhold the LAST flag, and send endless fragments to exhaust server memory.
