# WordPress Advanced Views plugin: unauthenticated stored XSS through comment parameter

The Advanced Views WordPress plugin up to and including 3.9.6 does not sanitize the 'comment' parameter, so unauthenticated visitors can store script that runs for anyone loading the affected page. The plugin also displays unapproved comments, so the payload runs before a moderator reviews it.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed version of the Advanced Views plugin (Display Framework for Gutenberg & Elementor) in the WordPress admin plugins list; versions up to and including `3.9.6` are affected.
- Search page content for `avf-layout` blocks bound to comment IDs and look for injected script tags.

## Fix

- Update the Advanced Views plugin to a version later than `3.9.6`; the sources do not name the fixed version, so check the plugin's changelog.
- Until patched, deactivate the plugin or restrict comment submission to trusted users.

## Timeline

## From the sources

The Advanced Views – Display Framework for Gutenberg & Elementor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.9.6 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is exploitable even against pending or unapproved comments, as the plugin's get_comment() lookup applies no approval-status filter, meaning a payload executes for any visitor loading an avf-layout block bound to the attacker's comment ID before the comment is ever reviewed.
