# UnRTF: out-of-bounds write lets a crafted RTF file crash it

UnRTF, the GNU RTF-to-text converter, has an out-of-bounds write triggered when it parses an attacker-crafted RTF file. The sources say a user opening such a file may hit a denial-of-service condition.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `unrtf --version` to see the installed version; the sources do not name the affected range.
- Check whether any pipeline or service converts untrusted RTF files with unrtf.

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T21:57:20+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-109831

## From the sources

UnRTF by GNU Project is vulnerable to out-of-bounds write. If a user opens an RTF file crafted by an attacker, it may lead to a denial-of-service (DoS) condition.
