# TP-Link RE305 V3: local command injection in tmpServer gives root

The tmpServer service on the TP-Link RE305 V3 range extender passes crafted requests to the operating system without checking them, so commands run. A local attacker with a low-privileged foothold on the device can send such a request to the TDDPv1 service and run commands as root.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Compare the firmware version on the device admin page with the vendor's advisory; the sources do not name affected versions: unknown
- Check whether the device is still on the RE305 V3 hardware revision: unknown

## Fix

- Update the RE305 V3 to the latest firmware from TP-Link; the fixed version is not named in the sources: unknown
- Keep the device off untrusted local networks and limit who can reach it on the LAN until patched

## Timeline

## From the sources

An
operating-system command injection vulnerability exists in the tmpServer
service of TP-Link RE305 V3. The service runs with root privileges and listens
on the local loopback interface. A local attacker with access to a
low-privileged process on the device may submit a crafted request to the TDDPv1
service and execute operating-system commands with root privileges.

Successful
exploitation may allow a local attacker with low privileges to obtain root
privileges and execute arbitrary operating-system commands on the affected
device.
