# NTPsec ntpd: crafted NTS request lets remote attacker terminate the daemon

NTPsec ntpd versions 1.1.4 through 1.2.5 contain a reachable exit triggered by an NTS request carrying excess NTS Cookie Placeholder extension fields. A remote attacker can use this to stop the time daemon.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `ntpd --version` or `ntpq -c version` to read the installed NTPsec version.
- Check whether NTS is enabled in the NTPsec configuration (unknown if the sources do not say which setting controls it).

## Fix

- Upgrade NTPsec to a release later than `1.2.5`; the first fixed version is unknown from the sources.
- Until patched, restrict access to the NTP service at the network edge if NTS is not needed (unknown if the sources give a specific setting).

## From the sources

Reachable exit in NTPsec ntpd 1.1.4 through 1.2.5 allows a remote attacker to terminate the daemon via an NTS request with excess NTS Cookie Placeholder extension fields.
