# Oracle VirtualBox 7.2.20: local low-privilege user can take over VirtualBox

A flaw in the Core component of Oracle VM VirtualBox 7.2.20 lets a low-privileged user who can log on to the host take over VirtualBox. Exploitation is hard and needs a person other than the attacker to interact, and the scope change means other products can be affected.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `VBoxManage --version` on each host and compare the output with the fixed release in Oracle's advisory
- Check whether any host runs VirtualBox `7.2.20`

## Fix

- Move VirtualBox off `7.2.20` to the fixed release named in Oracle's Critical Patch Update advisory (unknown in the sources)

## Timeline

## From the sources

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). The supported version that is affected is 7.2.20. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).
