# GPAC MP4Box: heap use-after-free lets a crafted MP4 crash it

GPAC's MP4Box tool has a heap use-after-free in its filter event code, present before version 2.5. A crafted MP4 file can make it crash, causing denial of service.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `MP4Box -version` and compare against `2.5`
- Check whether MP4Box processes untrusted MP4 files in a pipeline or service

## Fix

- Upgrade GPAC/MP4Box to `2.5` or later
- Until then, do not feed untrusted MP4 files to MP4Box

## Timeline

- 2026-10-24T13:15:54+00:00 epss https://api.first.org/data/v1/epss?cve=CVE-2025-60490

## From the sources

A heap use-after-free in the gf_filter_pid_send_event_downstream function (/filter_core/filter_pid.c) of GPAC Project/MP4Box before 2.5 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via supplying a crafted MP4 file.
