# An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking

Apple iOS, iPadOS and macOS contain an out-of-bounds write in the Image I/O framework. Exploitation in the wild is confirmed by CISA's KEV catalog, and the sources describe an attacker gaining code execution through crafted image processing, which is not explicitly stated.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:Apple iOS, iPadOS, and macOS affected ? fixed ?
- vendor:apple ipados affected < 15.8.5 fixed 15.8.5
- vendor:apple ipados affected >= 16.0, < 16.7.12 fixed 16.7.12
- vendor:apple ipados affected >= 17.0, < 17.7.10 fixed 17.7.10
- vendor:apple ipados affected >= 18.0, < 18.6.2 fixed 18.6.2
- vendor:apple iphone os affected < 15.8.5 fixed 15.8.5
- vendor:apple iphone os affected >= 16.0, < 16.7.12 fixed 16.7.12
- vendor:apple iphone os affected >= 17.0, < 18.6.2 fixed 18.6.2
- vendor:apple macos affected >= 13.0, < 13.7.8 fixed 13.7.8
- vendor:apple macos affected >= 14.0, < 14.7.8 fixed 14.7.8
- vendor:apple macos affected >= 15.0, < 15.6.1 fixed 15.6.1

## How to check

Check the device OS version under Settings > General > About (iOS/iPadOS) or About This Mac (macOS) and compare it against the fixed release in Apple's security notes.

## Fix

Update iOS, iPadOS and macOS to the latest version Apple has released with the fix; the exact fixed version is unknown from the sources.
Follow CISA's KEV guidance: apply vendor mitigations or discontinue use if mitigations are unavailable.

## From the sources

An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking. This issue is fixed in iOS 15.8.5 and iPadOS 15.8.5, iOS 16.7.12 and iPadOS 16.7.12, iOS 18.6.2 and iPadOS 18.6.2, iPadOS 17.7.10, macOS Sequoia 15.6.1, macOS Sonoma 14.7.8, macOS Ventura 13.7.8. Processing a malicious image file may result in memory corruption. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.
