# An attacker was able to achieve code execution in the content process by exploiting a use-after-free in Animation…

Firefox and Firefox ESR have a use-after-free bug in animation timelines that lets a crafted web page run code inside the content process. CISA lists it as actively exploited in the wild, and the KEV entry notes ransomware use.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:mozilla firefox affected < 115.16.1 fixed 115.16.1
- vendor:mozilla firefox affected < 131.0.2 fixed 131.0.2
- vendor:mozilla firefox affected >= 128.1.0, < 128.3.1 fixed 128.3.1
- vendor:mozilla thunderbird affected < 115.16.0 fixed 115.16.0
- vendor:mozilla thunderbird affected >= 128.0.1, < 128.3.1 fixed 128.3.1
- vendor:mozilla thunderbird affected = 131.0 fixed ?
- vendor:debian linux affected = 11.0 fixed ?
- vendor:Mozilla Firefox affected ? fixed ?

## How to check

Check the Firefox version under Help > About Firefox and compare it with the fixed release in the Mozilla advisory; the sources do not name a fixed version.

## Fix

Update Firefox and Firefox ESR to the latest release; the sources do not name the fixed version.
If an update is not possible, follow the vendor mitigations or stop using the product, as CISA requires.

## From the sources

An attacker was able to achieve code execution in the content process by exploiting a use-after-free in Animation timelines. We have had reports of this vulnerability being exploited in the wild. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 131.0.2, Firefox ESR < 128.3.1, Firefox ESR < 115.16.1, Thunderbird < 131.0.1, Thunderbird < 128.3.1, and Thunderbird < 115.16.0.
