# The issue was addressed with improved checks

Apple iOS and iPadOS contain a kernel flaw that lets a local app or user escalate privileges. An attacker who already has code running on the device can gain kernel-level control.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:Apple iOS and iPadOS affected ? fixed ?
- vendor:apple ipados affected < 16.7.1 fixed 16.7.1
- vendor:apple ipados affected >= 17.0, < 17.0.3 fixed 17.0.3
- vendor:apple iphone os affected < 16.7.1 fixed 16.7.1
- vendor:apple iphone os affected >= 17.0, < 17.0.3 fixed 17.0.3

## How to check

Settings > General > About shows the iOS or iPadOS version; compare it against the fixed release in Apple's security notes.

## Fix

Update iOS and iPadOS to a release that includes Apple's fix for CVE-2023-42824; the sources do not name the fixed version.
Follow CISA's instruction to apply the vendor mitigations or stop using the affected product if none exist.

## From the sources

The issue was addressed with improved checks. This issue is fixed in iOS 16.7.1 and iPadOS 16.7.1. A local attacker may be able to elevate their privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 16.6.
