# Bytebase: GitLab login trusts client URL, letting attackers log in as anyone

Bytebase versions 0.12.0 before 1.0.1 accept a client-supplied GitLab instance URL on the self-hosted GitLab login endpoint. An unauthenticated attacker can point that URL at their own server, claim any user's email, and receive a session as that user, including the Owner.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

Check the Bytebase version; a version from 0.12.0 up to but not including 1.0.1 is affected. Review logs for POST requests to /api/auth/login/GITLAB_SELF_HOST from unknown sources.

## Fix

Upgrade Bytebase to 1.0.1 or later. Rotate session tokens and review member and Owner accounts for unexpected changes if the instance was exposed.

## From the sources

Bytebase 0.12.0 before 1.0.1 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to log in as any user. The flaw stems from trusting client-supplied GitLab provider configuration in the POST /api/auth/login/GITLAB_SELF_HOST endpoint. Attackers can set instanceUrl to a server they control that returns an active user with a chosen email. Bytebase then issues session tokens for that principal, letting attackers impersonate existing users including the Owner or create new members.
