# Linux Kernel: Linux Kernel Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

A flaw in the Linux kernel's pipe handling ("Dirty Pipe") lets an unprivileged local user gain root privileges. It is listed as actively exploited in the wild by CISA.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:Linux Kernel affected ? fixed ?

## How to check

uname -r and compare against the patched kernel releases for your distribution (unknown in sources)

## Fix

Update the Linux kernel to a patched release from your distribution (CISA: apply updates per vendor instructions); reboot after install.

## From the sources

A flaw was found in the way the "flags" member of the new pipe buffer structure was lacking proper initialization in copy_page_to_iter_pipe and push_pipe functions in the Linux kernel and could thus contain stale values. An unprivileged local user could use this flaw to write to pages in the page cache backed by read only files and as such escalate their privileges on the system.
